Southern Carretera Austral: Nature and Traditions

Marble Caves, Baker River, Patagonia National Park, Calluqueo Glacier (6 days and 5 nights)

Be part of an experience that combines cycling, camaraderie, and adventure in the heart of Chilean Patagonia. For four days, on your gravel or mountain bike, you'll challenge your own limits on some of the continent's most breathtaking routes, become part of the Titan community at the camp, and share unforgettable moments with cyclists from all over the world.

Daily breakdown 

Day 1 Meeting with the 100% Patagonia Slow Travel staff. Transfer in a private van from Villa Cerro Castillo to the town of Puerto Tranquilo to carry out the Navigation to the Marble Caves Nature Sanctuary on General Carrer Lakea. In the afternoon, visit to the “Confluence of the Baker and Nef Rivers”, transfer to Cochrane. Dinner and accommodation.

 

Day 2  Hiking and Birdwatching in Patagonia National Park, The Chacabuco Valley area is characterized by its diverse ecosystems and is the natural habitat of the condor, puma, and guanaco. Visit the Park Museum, developed by the Rewilding Foundation. Includes a boxed lunch. Return to Cochrane, dinner, and overnight stay.

 

Day 3  Day Trip to Lake Cochrane, Your hosts will be a local family. They invite you to experience rural life in Patagonia: picking vegetables in their garden, baking bread on a wood-fired stove, and fishing. In the afternoon, enjoy hiking and a relaxing yoga class overlooking the mountains and the lake. Lunch, a snack, and transportation by land and lake are included. Return to Cochrane for dinner and overnight accommodation.

 

Day 4  Excursion to the Calluqueo Glacier, The San Lorenzo Glacier, a mass of ice originating from Mount San Lorenzo (3,706 meters above sea level), the second highest peak in Chilean Patagonia. Land transfer by van to the glacier area, lake navigation, and ice trekking with crampons. Moderate difficulty activity. Includes transportation, equipment, and a boxed lunch. Return to Cochrane, dinner, and overnight stay.

 

Day 5  Horseback riding along the Baker River, The most voluminous river in Chile. This time, the local hosts are a pioneer family who welcome us to their property, giving a safety briefing and preparing the tack for the horseback ride. Country lunch and transfer to Villa Cerro Castillo. Dinner and overnight stay.

 

Day 6   Transfer to Balmaceda Airport. 

Clothing recommendations

Regardless of the time of year, in Coyhaique and the Carretera Austral you can experience all four seasons in one day, so we suggest:

 

  • Dress in layers, polypropylene or quick-drying top
  • Warm fleece
  • Parka
  • Water-repellent trousers and windbreaker
  • Neck, head and hand protection (buff, gloves, cap / jockey cap)
  • Sunglasses
  • Water bottle
  • Sunscreen
  • Outdoor boots with a high shaft and warm socks
  • Small backpack with extra clothes
